Spillane refused to allow any involvement by the Italians. The convention center was being constructed in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC just south of Hell's Kitchen. In the 1970s, under Spillane, the Irish mob became organized and expanded their control out of Hell's Kitchen to most of the west side of Manhattan. ![]() So began the infamous Irish-Italian Mob War of 1970s. Coupled with the amount Spillane was already generating from Madison Square Garden, the Hudson River waterfront and the local unions and Spillane would have been powerful enough to challenge the Italians for control of the city. The amount of money the new convention center was going to generate was enormous. Javits Convention Center was being built on Spillane's westside. It was Spillane's refusal to allow the Italian mobsters to participate in the rackets in Hell's Kitchen and along the west side of Manhattan that led to his downfall. Although he ran the rackets such as gambling and loansharking, he never allowed the sale of drugs. Often, Spillane would kidnap members of the Italian Mafia and hold them for ransom to raise money for his operations. Though Italian mobsters dominated organized crime in the city, the Italian mob stayed out of Hell's Kitchen while Spillane was the boss. He married Maureen McManus, the daughter of the powerful Hell's Kitchen Democratic district leader Eugene McManus. In 1960, Mickey took over the rackets left to him by his predecessor Hughie Mulligan. Īfter his release from prison, Spillane started as a numbers runner for various organized crime figures in Hell's Kitchen. At 16 or 17, he attempted to rob a movie theater, but was shot by a police officer. Spillane was born on July 13, 1933, to Michael Anthony Spillane and Margaret Curran. Spillane, the so-called “Gentleman Gangster", was a marked contrast to the violent Westies mob members who succeeded him in Hell's Kitchen.
